New Song: “It’s Halloween!” Ignition Lab Week #25

The Ignition Lab is a group songwriting challenge to write a song a week  in 2013, using weekly word prompts as a starting point. Follow our work on Facebook: facebook.com/TheIgnitionLab

The prompt for week #25 was to write a holiday song–ANY holiday. *evil grin* OF COURSE, I chose Halloween!

I wanted to write about creatures living among us who can finally take off their masks for this one day a year. I thought specifically of a medusa-like creature who has glowing eyes, sharp teeth and can float. It was completely fun and totally playful.

This was really all about the haunting melody and calling my inner Danny Elfman…and the bassline. Without prejudice, I’ve included as many supernatural creatures as I could. Simple rhymes, uncomplicated rhythms.

I feel like I need to do something with this song. Any suggestions? Record it with a weird orchestra and release it as a single for Halloween? Arrange it for kazoos? Something…Here’s the video. Enjoy. ?

P.S. Illustrator Kristina Carroll did a beautiful sketch of Medusa for this song. Check it out in the video!

It’s Halloween

Something is stirring
Growing restless inside
It’s counting the minutes
For the hour to arrive

When vampires roam
Mummies moan
Shadows move to this groove
And witches make their brew

It’s Halloween, it’s Halloween
You’ll never know who you’ll meet
It’s Halloween, it’s Halloween
Are you ready for a trick or a treat

The mask is fading
True colors revealed
No longer in hiding
You almost forgot how it feels

To stretch your smile
Though it’s wild
Let your hair do what it dares
And rise up in the air

Don’t hesitate or you’ll be late
To take part in this fun
No need to hide your glowing eyes
People will delight in this fright

Zombies wake, ogres shake
Werewolves dance on moonlit lakes
Trolls under the bridge set up their bait
