New Song: “Leave Me Be” Ignition Lab Week #46

The Ignition Lab is a group songwriting challenge to write a song a week  in 2013, using weekly word prompts as a starting point. Follow our work on Facebook: facebook.com/TheIgnitionLab

The word prompt for week #46 was SELF PITY. I had written lyrics and had a vague idea for this song for many many weeks before I finally sat down and learned how to play it. I wish I were a better piano player to quickly figure out some neat embellishments to fit in around the singing. It has a very show-tune feel, and went a little over the top with self pity. But that’s the point, isn’t it? Walking bass line, diminished chords, seven chords, suspended chords…bring it on. Lyrics after the video.

Leave Me Be

Down underground
Hearing the sounds of my whining
Echoing in the caves of my mind
Playing the same tape over again
Like an endless pool of sorrow
I weep for my tomorrow

Leave me be, leave me be
Swimming in my pool of misery
Leave me be, leave me be
I’ll come back for air when I’m ready to breathe

Too tired to care
About my disheveled hair
Don’t want to talk about it
Don’t want to hear about it
You’ve got something to say
There’s nothing I wanna hear
Don’t want your expert advice
Don’t want to hear that you’re right

Leave me be, leave me be
Swimming in my pool of misery
Leave me be, leave me be
I’ll come back for air when I’m ready to breathe
I’ll come back for air when I’m ready to breathe
Don’t bother me ’til I’m ready to breathe
